from: DAYTON DAILY JOURNAL dated: Monday October 26, 1885 page: 4 col. 4

"FUNERAL OF J.St.J. CLARKSON" The funeral of J.St.J. Clarkson, which occurred yesterday afternoon from the First United Brethren Church, was very largely attended. Members of the G.A.R. to the number of about two hundred, met at Old Guard Hall, formed in line and preceded by a band, marched to the undertaking rooms of Berk & Grey, where they received the remains and escorted them to the church. The auditorium, gallery and vestibule of the church were crowded, and many were unable to get in and remained on the sidewal till the close of the exercises. The services, which were very impressive, were conducted by Rev. W.J. Shuey, assisted by Rev. Briggs. After the reading the the Scriptures, prayer and the singing of a huymn by the choir, Mr. Shuey gave a short but interesting biographical sketch of the deceased, dwelling mainly upon his Christian character since his connection with the church in this city. Before leaving the church the coffin was opened and the remains were viewed by nearly a thousand people. They were then borne to the street and placed in the hearse. The long procession, with the Grand Army in the lead, moved to Woodland, where the body6 was interred with military honors. Seldom, if ever were so many people seein in the cemetery on a funeral occasion."
