About Maj. James Lyon

Major James Lyon was the eldest son of Col. Matthew Lyon. He learned the printing trade while quite young, and 1797 at the time when John Adams was President and his father, Colonel Matthew Lyon was fined and imprisoned under the 1798 Alien and Sedition Acts. He was editor of the famous magazine titled "A Republican Magazine: or, Repository of Political Truths "The Scourge of Aristocracy, and Repository of Important Political Truths".

In 1800 he became Public Printer to Congress under the Jefferson Administration. In 1804 Jefferson sent him with dispatches under the Secretary of War to General Wilkerson who was stationed at Baton Rouge, advising him to take possession of New Orleans as our government had purchased Louisiana from France. He also published the first American papers in New Orleans. He also, Published the first American paper in Mobile, Alabama when General Wilkerson took possession.
