Major Mial Scurlock was born in 1725 to Thomas Scurlock and Ann (---) Linkhorne Scurlock. Mial Scurlock married Sarah Howard (1725-1782) and married Sarah (name not known) after his first wife passed away. In 1747, Mial, his brother Alexander and others inventoried the estate of Daniel Scurlock (Richmond County , VA Will Book 6, pages 354-355). Mial Scurlock was listed as a slave owner in Richmond County in1765 (NFPR page 214). In 1772, Mial Scurlock sold land in Richmond County, VA and made the deed as "Maj. Mial Scurlock, of the Co. of Halifax, N. Carolina." (Richmond County, VA, Deed book 3, page382). He passed away in 1781 in Chattam, North Carolina, USA. He served in the Revolutionary War as a Major and was appointed First Major of two companies of Minute Men raised in Chattam County. Prior to the American Revolution, Mial Scurlock had been a planter, surveyor and miller. In 1777, he became the Clerk of Chattam County and served in the House of Commons. Three of their sons, George, James, and William are known to have served in the Revolutionary War. George was killed in battle at Cowpers, South Carolina. Mial, Jr. served in the North Carolina General Assembly in 1797, Thomas was captured and jailed in Wilmington by the British.
