About Major Alfred Madison Barbour

Superintendant of the Harper's Ferry Armory during John Brown's Raid. Confederate officer. Born in Culpeper County, VA. Attended University of Virginia and Harvard Law School. Prewar legislator. Superintendant at Harper's Ferry 1858-1861. Confederate quartermaster. Aide to General J.E. Johnston, later to Polk. Also served in Montgomery AL and Meridian MS as quartermaster. Disliked by Jubal Early, who termed him "not energetic or efficent."
