Martin Van Buren Murphy served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company E, 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He entered service on 26 Aug 1863 and mustered in 18 Sep 1861 in Cairo, IL with the rank of Private. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. Promoted to Captain in charge of Company E on May 20, 1862. Promoted Major on July 1, 1863. He died of Tetanus on Aug 15, 1863 in Cairo, IL.
