About Marc Gary Joubert

Marc Joubert (1977 - 2007)

Brief overview:

Marc (30), and his fiancee were guests at a thirtieth birthday party that took place on Saturday evening 26th May 2007, at the restaurant St. Tropez in the Morningside area, when he was shot in the neck. He died soon after.

Seven robbers burst into the restaurant at around 10:00 pm while the manager was working on the ground floor, but the party was still going on on the first floor.

    • Police made the breakthrough during a pre-dawn surveillance at the KwaMashu Men's Hostel in A Section yesterday, said Superintendent Vincent Mdunge. Detectives from the organised crime unit went to the hostel after a tip-off from the public. "Police spotted the suspect Bhekinkosi Shandu, 26, aka Rusta Msisi, at about 2am. "When he realised he was surrounded he opened fire, but police returned fire, killing him on the spot," Mdunge said. An AK-47 rifle and a handgun were recovered at the scene. Mdunge said police went to Umbilo on further information where they nabbed a second suspect also linked to the fatal shooting. *https://archive.is/GTIPD

  • Cause of Death: UNNATURAL CAUSES
  • Fifteen of his friends and family organised an anti-crime march in London - claimed to be the largest South African protest in the British capital since the anti-apartheid marches of the '80s - to protest against South Africa's crime epidemic and to offer their support in combating it. One friend, Ryan Hoffman - a co-founder of the new activist group, Act4SA - said: "It's time we loved our country as much as he loved it; it's time we helped make it a fit place to live in. "None of us here in London ever want to get a call on a Sunday morning again to say someone we care about has been murdered. We're here to say: we want to be involved in the solution to crime."
  • Joubert's sister, Shannon, who travelled from Durban for the march, told the Sunday Times: "I've come because I want to say to people: don't sit around and wait for [murder] to happen to your loved ones or your friends. And don't let the country my brother loved so much become a place of fear. Stand together and be proactive: support the police; support anything that will stop this crime, which is out of control." Bearing T-shirts, balloons and banners featuring Nelson Mandela's statement that South Africans had the right to live "free from fear", they walked from the Thames to Whitehall, where a moment of silence was held for Joubert - "and the 50 other South Africans murdered on average every day". *https://archive.is/Wzps8
