A PIONEER GONE

Marcellus L. Bates died at his home in Fontanelle Sunday afternoon after a long and tedious illness. For weary weeks and months he has suffered from the weakness and infirmities of physical collapse, but has had the tender care of loving hearts and hands about him, and all that was possible was done to alleviate his sufferings.

M. L. Bates was born at Henderson, Jefferson Co., New York August 28, 1821, and died at Fontanelle, Iowa, Nov. 2, 1902, aged 81 years, 2 months and 5 days. He lived in the state of New York until he was twenty years old, when he removed to Nauvoo, Ill., where he remained for three years. He then returned to New York and three months later was married to Miss L. Campbell, buy which marriage he had four children.

In 1849 he moved to Wisconsin, remaining there until 1869, when he came to Fontanelle. In 1872 he married his present wife, Mrs. Grace Bates, by whom he has one son, M. N. Bates, of Bridgewater. He leaves a wife, two sons, two daughters and a stepson, Henry Madison to mourn his departure. For many years he was a consistent member of the church and died in the full assurance of acceptance at the hands of his Maker.

The funeral was held at 1 p. m. Tuesday, from the M. E. Church, conducted by Elder S. Butler, and attended by a large audience of mourning and sympathizing friends.
