CURATOR'S NOTE: it is not clear whether the Margaret Foliot who married John de Camoys was the same as the one who married Hugh de Hastings. Gerald Paget's sources suggest that they were two different women, sisters, with similar names. The Peerage gives the parentage of the Margaret who married Camoys as the daughter of Richard Foliot and Margery Emley, while the Margery / Margaret who married Hastings was the daughter of Richard Foliot and Joan de Braose. This needs resolution. It is more likely that they were both daughters of Joan de Braose and Richard Foliot.

Gerald Paget's research {http://histfam.familysearch.org/getperson.php?personID=I3841&tree=PagetHeraldicBaronag} posits Marjery and Margaret as sisters one year apart, with Marjery as the elder, who were co-heirs of Richard Foliot and both daughters of Joan de Braose. He lists Marjery as age 12 and Margaret as age 11 upon the death of their elder brother Richard in 1325. Our Geni tree will follow this model.

A Margaret Foliot, daughter of Richard Foliot and Margery Emley, married Sir John de Camoys. Gerald Paget's research lists her instead as a daughter of Richard Foliot and Joan de Braose and a younger sister to Marjery, with both girls co-heirs to their father's estate upon the death of their elder brother Richard d. 29 May 1325:

KINSHIP: Younger daughter and co-heir, sister of Marjery. IDENTITY: Her wardship was granted to Ralph de Camois, 20 Aug 1325 (Rot.Fin.19 Edw.2.m 18). CONDITION: Died without issue, and all her father's inheritance passed to her sister Marjery, wife of Hugh de Hasgings [sic: Hastings] (De Banco, Hill.5 Edw.4. m 102).

However, ThePeerage.com provides conflicting information about this family and shows her as having had children:

Richard Foliot was born in 1284 at Norfolk, England.2 He was the son of Jordan Foliot.2 He married Margery Emley, daughter of Sir John Emley.2 He died in 1315.2

Children of Richard Foliot and Margery Emley

  • Richard Foliot, 3rd Lord Foliot1 b. c 1311, d. 29 May 1325
  • Margaret Foliot+1 b. 1314, d. 1353 (married Sir John de Camoys)

This Margaret Foliot married Sir John de Camoys, Baron, b. 1310, of, Trotton, Sussex, England d. Aft 1383

Daughter of Sir Richard Foliot of Gressenhall and Weasenham and Joan de Brewes, granddaughter of Sir William de Brewes.

Wife of Sir Hugh Hastings, son of Sir John de Hastings and Isabel le Despenser, grandson of Sir Henry de Hastings and Joan de Cantelowe, Sir Hugh le Despenser and Isabel de Beauchamp. They were married 18 May 1330 and had two sons and three daughters; Sir Hugh, John, Isabel, Margery and Maud.

Margery was co-heiress to her brother, John Foliot, by which she inherited the manors of Fenwick and Norton, Yorkshire.

After Sir Hugh's death in 1347, Margery complained that John de Wentworth and his sons William and Roger broke into the parks of the manors of Fenwick and Norton and took away six oxen and four cows worth £10, felled trees, fished in her rivers, carried away deer ad assaulted her men and servants.

Margery was buried 30 August 1349, in the Furnivalle Chapel, in the Church of the Friars Minor at Doncaster.
