Donald McAuley was born on the Isle of Lewis off the coast of Scotland, in the year 1817 and came to Canada sometime in the 1840’s. After arriving in Halifax, he was articled to Hudson’s Bay Company at about the age of 16 and worked for them for many years. From there, Donald started his journey west and walked to Fort Garry where he spent the winter. The following spring he continued his journey to Kamloops through the Kicking Horse Pass. In the early 1850’s he met and married a local Indian girl whose name was Mary Anne Oakpectwa. They arrived in Kamloops around 1856, still with the Hudson’s Bay Company where he worked as a trapper until 1860 when he filed on a homestead at Cherry Creek. This homestead is where the first dairy farm was started in the area. He sold out the homestead and moved to a place on the North Thompson where he raised a family of five. In later years he lived with his daughter in North Kamloops until his death on May 18, 1912 at the age of 95.

Mary Ann (Oakpectwa) Warpotksva: Mary Ann was born in 1811 and was the daughter of a Deadman’s Creek Indian Chief. It was thought she was 112 years old when she died on January 5, 1922. Donald and Mary had six children.
