Evidence from the National Records of Scotland

25 November 1523: Charter by which Margaret Hepburn, lady Sinclair, confirms that she has sold two bovates of land called Polknaif, in the sheriffdom of Stirling, to Alexander, Lord Livingston, who obtained a charter of confirmation under the Great Seal of Scotland on 6 December 1523. Margaret Hepburn, who is mentioned, otherwise undesignate, as spouse of Henry, Lord Sinclare, on 4 December 1488, seems to have been a daughter of Adam, Master of Hailes. Her husband was killed at the battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513, and she survived him many years. She died before 8 November 1543. On 1 April 1549, Mr. John Hepburne, Parson of Dalry, who was a natural son of Mr. John Hepburne of Beinstoun, was mentioned as one of her executors. The Scots Peerage II: p. 150

Henry Sinclair, Lord Sinclair married: "before 4 December 1488, Margaret, daughter of Adam Hepburn, Master of Hailes, and sister of Patrick, first Earl of Bothwell. She survived him, and succeeded him in the lease of Orkney and Zetland, the accounts for which she rendered to Exchequer till her death. She was alive on 11 June 1542, when she, being in extremis, renounced the devil and all the pomps of this world." The Scots Peerage VII: pp. 571-2

Margaret Hepburn was born circa 1456. She was the daughter of Adam Hepburn, Master of Hailes, and Helen Home. She married Henry Sinclair, 3rd Lord Sinclair, son of William Sinclair, 2nd Lord Sinclair and Christina Leslie, before 4 December 1488. She died between 11 June 1542 and 14 December 1542. From before 4 December 1488, her married name became Sinclair.
