Margaret Gordon Hunter

Margaret Mackie was born in Edzell, Kincardine, Scotland. Margaret Mackie married a labourer, Robert Hunter in Dundee, Angus on 29 May 1829. On 14 July the following year, the Hunter family left Cumray on the Clyde, Scotland, arriving in Nelson, New Zealand, on November 4. They were assisted migrants on the "New Zealand". Their daughter Ellen remained in Scotland. The Hunters settled in Waimea East, where Robert worked as a sawyer and later as a farmer. Margaret was widowed in 1853 and she died suddenly in 1861 at the age of 66. She is buried in Hallowell Cemetery, Nelson. Source: Find A Grave Memorial Page.

Margaret Hunter died September 1861. Wikitree records five children born in the marriage but no birth/baptism records. Ellen or Hellen, Robert Jnr, Gardner, Peter, and Sarah. Nothing found yet to support a New York connection (Margaret Hunter born circa 1837 New York; Census 1850 Louisville, Saint Lawrence, New York, USA).
Margaret Hunter Mackie is recorded as being ten years Robert's senior in the 1841 Census so born about 1796, date reinforced by age at death. FindaGrave give birth year 1794. No grave photo.
Margaret was widowed in 1853. She settled Robert's estate in 1859 and signed her affidavit Margaret Gordon Hunter.
