About Margaret Lake

Margaret READE - b. Jul 11, 1598, North Benfleet, Essex; d. Sep. 1672, Ipswich, Essex Co., MA. Her will of Aug. 30, 1672 was proved Sep. 24, 1672. She left her husband in England and immigrated to New England before 1635 with her daughters Ann and Martha, and resided for some years with her brother-in-law Gov. John WINTHROP, Jr. Her later years were spent at Ipswich, living with her daughter Martha (LAKE) HARRIS and with her brother-in-law Deputy Gov. Samuel SYMONDS. In a letter of Jan. 18, 1661/2 she wrote to John WINTHROP, Jr., Margaret includes comments "concerning my husbands death, & how hee edned his dayes." Daughter of Edmund READE and Elizabeth COOKE.

Biography

Margaret was a daughter of Edmund Reade and Elizabeth (Cooke) Reade ofWickford and North Benfleet, Essex, England. She was born on 11 July 1598 and baptized on 16 July 1598 at North Benfleet, Essex.<ref name=Davis315>Davis, Ancestry of John Lake, page 315.</ref>

She was married to John Lake in about 1616. <ref name=Davis315 /> Children of John Lake and Margaret (Reade) Lake were:<ref>Davis, pages316-317.</ref>

  1. John, baptized on 6 July 1617 at Wickford, Essex
  2. Thomas, baptized on 18 January 1618/9 at Wickford, Essex# Richard, baptized on 21 May 1620 and buried on 22 May 1620, at Wickford, Essex
  3. Ann (later called Hannah), baptized on 3 July 1621 at North Benfleet, Essex; emigrated to New England with her mother and married John Gallop
  4. Elizabeth, baptized on 5 June 1623 and buried on 31 August 1623 at North Benfleet, Essex

Margaret (Reade) Lake left England without her husband some time between 1631 and 1635, emigrating to New England with her sisters, including Elizabeth (Read) Winthrop, wife of Gov. John Winthrop, and her two daughters, Ann (Hannah) and Martha.

Margaret lived in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and died there.
