Footsteps Down the Appalachian Trail
1701-1760
Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina
Routledge become Rutledge as the family moves from Pennsylvania to South Carolina. I've never seen the Appalachian Mountains, the Blue Ridge or Alleghenies and Cumberland except by airplane. From above their exquisite aestheitic of swirls and curves belies the ruggedness of the mountains, vallies, river and creeks and "hollows" that it beautiful to picture and often difficult to live in. Yet here in the mountains foothills, the Routledges found their living and their home.
Don Rutledge said of John Routledge, that he "was born in Middletown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1680. John became active in the Quaker church and when he and Margaret Dalton married in the Falls Meeting House of Bucks County on May 9, 1701, William Penn was one of the guests at the wedding. John Routledge died in Bucks County 23 May, 1725 and Margaret his Wife died April 29, 1735 also in Bucks County.
Two of Margaret's and John's seven children, Thomas and John (who should be called John Sr. and his father John #1) moved west and eventually south, trading with the Indians on the Frontier. As did many other Quakers they moved down the Shenandoah Valley though Virginia and ended up in South Carolina. Thomas settled in what is not Fairfield County, South Carolina and John Sr. settled on land on Hanging Rock Creek, a branch of Lynches Creek in Lancaster County, near the Kershaw county line before 1760. From now on the spelling of the Routledge name was changed to Rutledge, conforming to the Scotch-Irish Rutledges who had become prominent in Charleston." (by Don Rutledge)
