About Margaret Chanler Rutherfurd

Margaret Chanler Stuyvesant Rutherfurd was the niece and adopted daughter of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant and Helena Rutherfurd Stuyvesant. (Lewis Morris Rutherfurd's aunt). Her birth parents were Elizabeth Sheriff Winthrop (10/4/1701-12/29/1866 daughter of Benjamin and Judith Stuyvesant Winthrop) and Rev. John White Chanler. On July 22, 1841, the accomplished Margaret Chanler Stuyvesant married Lewis Morris Rutherfurd at St. Mark's Church, Bowery, NYC. Lewis Morris Rutherfurd was a graduate of Williams College, Massachusetts in 1834 at the age of 18. He passed the bar in 1837 and practiced law with William H. Steward(Secretary of State under US President Abraham Lincoln) in Auburn, New York. Margaret and Lewis Rutherfurd's happy union lasted almost half a century. The Stuyvesant family was very supportive of this great union. The couple had seven children, two which died in infancy. Their 1st son Stuyvesant Rutherfurd(1842-1907) was born one year later. He would eventually change his name to Rutherfurd Stuyvesant (under a provision of the will of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant-1847) inorder for the Stuyvesant fortune to pass to him. At the age of 29, young Rutherfurd Stuyvesant would become a great developer of New York City. Their daughter Louisa Morris Rutherfurd (1855-1892)died at the age of 37. Their son, Winthrop Rutherfurd (1862-1944) would commission a 18,000 square foot brick manor home (1903-1905) on the family's estate on Allamuchy Pond, Allamuchy, NJ. Their daughter Margaret Rutherfurd White(1854-1916) married Henry White a US diplomate. Their son Lewis Morris Rutherfurd Jr.(1859-1901)initiated the family's breeding of fox terrior dogs along with Winthrop. Helen Rutherfurd b. 5/13/1844 d. 10/5/1845 and Elizabeth Winthrop Rutherfurd b. 1/21/1847 d. 10/3/1847. Lewis Morris Rutherfurd abandoned his law practice in 1849 and dedicated his leisure to the science of astronomy. He performed pioneering work in spectral analysis and invented instrumentation to produce quality photographs of the Sun, Moon, Planets, and Stars. "Rutherfurd Crater" on the Moon is named after him. The couple would live on the Stuyvesant estate until 1880. As early as 1866, thier abode of happy leisure life was surrendering to the demands of a large city. Margaret and Lewis left NYC in 1880 and retreated to thier rural estate in Allamuchy, NJ. This ancestoral land was appropriately named Tranquility. Margaret Chanler Stuyvesant Rutherfurd died on Sept 26, 1890 and was buried in the Rutherfurd Family Plot, in the Tranquility Cemetery near their estate in Allamuchy, NJ.
