About Margret Witherspoon

MARGARET WITHERSPOON

Spelling Variations: Margaret Wotherspoon (1768) Margret Wotherspoon (1771) Margret Witherspoon (1774) Margret Witherspoon (1777) Margaret Witherspoon (1783) Margaret Wotherspoon (1787) Margaret Wotherspoon (1799)

Spurious Pedigree

Margaret Witherspoon, here treated, has been misidentified as the daughter of John Witherspoon and Margaret Robison in two pedigrees published by MyHeritage when she is in fact the daughter of ROBERT WOTHERSPOON, cooper in Glasgow. It follows, that Margaret Wotherspoon, here treated, is not the same person as Margaret Wotherspoon

The Question of Identity

Margaret Witherspoon, here treated, is actually the daughter of ROBERT WOTHERSPOON, cooper in Glasgow. Glasgow Burgesses, 1751-1846: 170 A baptismal record has not been identified for her and so the name of her mother cannot be identified from this source. However, her age was returned as 45 years in her burial record dated 30 April 1799 and, if this is correct, it suggests that she may have been born during the twelve month period that began on 1 May 1753 and ended on 30 April 1754. National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Deaths, 1797-1826, reference OPR.644/1/52] Image of Burial Record

Death and Burial

A date and place of death has not been identified for Margaret Witherspoon, here treated. However, she was buried at Glasgow on 30 April 1799, probably in the Cathedral burying ground, and it seems likely that she died in Glasgow shortly before this. Her burial record reads as follows: "Margaret Wotherspoon spouse of John Ruthven Weaver [Diseases] consumption [Aged] 45". Her husband was evidently still alive on this date. Marriage

Margaret Witherspoon, here treated, married John Ruthven, Weaver in Glasgow. Glasgow Burgesses, 1751-1846: 170 A date and place of marriage has not been identified but the baptism of their eldest child was registered at Glasgow on 5 December 1768, and it might reasonably be suggested, therefore, that they were married before this date. It is possible that they were married in 1767 or 1768.
