About Marguerite Sllortssa

One of the people of the confluence: Tk'emlúps te Secwepemc

Marguerite Sllortssa is the daughter of Jacques Houoko. She was born in 1828, probably at Kamloops in British Columbia, Canada, because she married John Leonard there on 28 December 1868 British Columbia Marriages

First Marriage

Marguerite Sllortssa married John Leonard. They were married after the custom of the country in the first instance but following the death of John's Orkney wife on 16 May 1868, John was received into the Roman Catholic Church and they were married at Kamloops in British Columbia, Canada, on 28 December 1868. The marriage was recorded in the register of the Okanagan Mission, where the French speaking Catholic priest described him thus: "J. Baptist Lanor" (age) 55, farmer (born in) "Hockney Island" (son of) "Peter Lanor, workman" British Columbia Marriage Registrations

Children of the Third Marriage

John Leonard, and his third wife,Marguerite Sllortssa, had five children. Their names follow:

  1. John Leonard, younger
  2. Leonard
  3. Louis Leonard
  4. Leonard
  5. Leonard

Note Marguerite Sllortssa had a fourth son. He is identified as Marshell Leonard, aged eighteen years, in the 1891 census return but it is not yet clear who his father was. He appears to have been born in 1872 or 1873, which is prior to his mother's marriage to Patrick Baboone, and so it is possible that he is the youngest son of John Leonard 1891 Census of Canada

The Death of her First Husband

Jean Barman tells us that following the accidental death of their father, that her three boys: "were brought up in the Kamloops Band as Indians" [Jean Barman, Sojourning Sisters: The Lives And Letters Of Jessie And Annie McQueen (University of Toronto Press Incorporated, 2003), page 136].

Second Marriage

Following the death of her first husband, Marguerite Sllortssa married Patrick Baboon of the Kamloops Indian Band British Columbia Marriages They had at least one child, a daughter named Janie who was born in 1880 or 1881 British Columbia Marriages

Children of the Second Marriage

  1. Baboone

Kamloops 1891

Marguerite Sllortssa is very likely the widow named Margaret Leonard who was lodging in the household of her son John and his wife Julia when the census was enumerated on 9 May 1891. With her was an eighteen year old man named Marshell Leonard and a ten year old girl named Jane Leonard, both probably her children 1891 Census of Canada
