About Marguerite Sllortssa

MARGUERITE SLLORTSSA (floruit 1868-91)

is one of the people of the confluence: Tk'emlúps te Secwepemc

Marguerite Sllortssa is the daughter of Jacques Houok. She was born, in 1827, or 1828, probably at Kamloops in British Columbia, Canada, for she married John Leonard there on 28 December 1868 [British Columbia Marriage Registrations, 1859-1932, index and images, FamilySearch]

Her marriage registration certificate identifies her husband as "J Baptiste Lanor" age 55 years, born "Hockney Island" son of "Peter Lanor" There seems hardly any doubt, therefore, in spite of the priest's frenchification of people and places, that this is John Leonard, son of Peter Leonard, who was born on the Orkney Island of Rousay in 1811. With regard to John Leonard's place of origin, it is worthy of note that his sons John and Louis gave up their deceased father's birthplace as Scotland when the census of 1891 was enumerated [Canadian Census for 1891].Their ethnicity is identified as Scottish in the 1881 census [Canada Census, 1881, index, FamilySearch]

1891 Census for Kamloops

Marguerite Sllortssa is very likely the widow named Margaret Leonard who was lodging in the household of her son John and his wife Julia when the census was enumerated on 9 May 1891. With her was an eighteen year old man named Marshell Leonard and a ten year old girl named Jane Leonard, both probably her children [Library and Archives Canada; Census 1891 Census of Canada]

Children of the First Marriage

Marguerite Sllortssa and John Leonard had at least four children, three sons and one daughter:

(1) John Leonard

(2) Joseph Leonard

(3) Louis Leonard

(4) Jane Katherine Leonard.

Jean Barman tells us that following the accidental death of their father, the three boys: "were brought up in the Kamloops Band as Indians" [Jean Barman, Sojourning Sisters: The Lives And Letters Of Jessie And Annie McQueen (University of Toronto Press Incorporated, 2003), page 136].

Marguerite Sllortssa had a fourth son. He is identified as Marshell Leonard, aged eighteen years, in the 1891 census return but it is not yet clear who his father was. He appears to have been born in 1872 or 1873, which is prior to his mother's marriage to Patrick Baboone, and so it is possible that he is the youngest son of John Leonard [Canada Census, 1891, index, FamilySearch]

Second Marriage

Following the death of her first husband, Marguerite Sllortssa married Patrick Baboon of the Kamloops Indian Band [British Columbia Marriage Registrations, 1859-1932, index and images, FamilySearch] They had at least one child, a daughter named Janie who was born in 1880 or 1881 [British Columbia Marriage Registrations, 1859-1932, index and images, FamilySearch]

Children of the Second Marriage

(1) Jane Leonard [Library and Archives Canada; Census 1891 Census of Canada]
