About Maria Sophia Bieker

Maria Sophia Schaeffer is the daughter of Johan Franz Anton Schaeffer and Maria Fredrika Tador. She was born December 20, 1837 in Sundern, Germany. She came to the U.S. at age seven with her parents, brother Johann Franz, ten years older than herself, and one sister, Elizabeth, two years younger. Her father had sold out in Sundern to avoid bankruptcy, because of mounting debts. They landed at Baltimore December 11, 1844. They took the B&O railroad to Cincinnati, Ohio, and proceeded just across the river to Covington, Ky., where they lived two years. Her father and the older brothers worked on the streets. But, Johan Franz Anton Schaeffer longed for a farm and a Catholic and German community as he was used to in Germany. He and a friend then went to Teutopolis, Ill., but there was no church built yet there. They then went to Ferdinand, Ind. He bought an 80 acre farm for $200.00 two miles S.W. of Ferdinand, Indiana. The land was all timbered and so the two men went to work and put up a one room log house and cleared 5 to 6 acres the first winter and planted it to corn. Bot a horse and a cow. The corn furnished feed for the horse and cow and a couple of pigs. There was no wheat flour to be had and cornmeal and potatoes and a little hog meal was their eats. His money was all gone then and they cooked on a fireplace. The house had not even a floor in it. Her mother died after two years from a fever. This left Sophia as chief cook in a family of six, two boys having been born since they came to the U.S.
