About Maria Elizabeth Brake
Maria Margareta, also known as Mary Margaret and possibly Margaretha.
Durlach is a borough of the German city of Karlsruhe, near the Rhine River, which is the border between Germany and Alsace area of France Durlach was almost totally destroyed by the French in 1689. Important attractions are the Karlsburg Castle in the center, erected in 1565 and later used as barracks, now with some museums, an ancient town hall, a church with an excellent organ, and in the market-place a statue of the margrave Charles II.
After finalizing her obligations to her husband's estate, Margaret may have left Frederick County with her son, Jacob Brake Sr. and settled on the South Branch. In November of 1767 a Margaretha Brechtel is recorded on a list of communicants from the South Branch in the records of the Evangelical Reformed Church of Frederick, MD.
