About Maria (Ria) Butterley

Career And Other Matters
When her parents went to Deniliquin, New South Wales, in 1876/77, the child Ria remained with her grandmother, Bridget Butterley in Bendigo. Around this time Bridget Butterley and Ria went to live with Lude and Maria Dureau and Ria was raised as one of the Dureau family. When Ria's mother and youngest brother both died in 1883 her three remaining brothers joined her in the the Dureau household. This whole extended Dureau family moved to Melbourne. around 1890, On 5th October 1905 Bridget Butterley passed away and subsequently, in 1909, the 35 year old Ria moved out of the Dureau Family home. During World War I Ria went to Port Fairy to live with Mary Dureau in order to provide her with some assistance in caring for her children whilst her husband was at the war. She was afflicted by a wasting disease (muscular dystrophy or multiple sclerosis or similar) and was in a nursing home from about the mid 1920's until her death in July 1953.
