- From the "William and Ernestine Heuer Family History" book, printed in 1983:
- "Marie Heuer Lindemeier worked very hard, was an excellent cook, a strict disciplinarian. She was artistic; she made lovely quilts (first, from necessity, and in later years because she liked to sew---this was when the second family was almost grown). She played a little on the pump organ and the accordion. She made laundry soap. She put ashes in a barrel and added water. that is how she got the lye to make the soap, which was cooked outside in a large, black iron kettle. She made flowers from tissue paper and baskets from corn husks. She made homemade beer and wine. on Sundays the beers and wines were passed around in the afternoon. Katie also remembers when the Easter eggs were being dyed for the children, by using onion skins to color the eggs and cotton fabric that had been dampened. Then, the color came off on the eggs. Marie was very quick. She made lovely coffee cake and bread. She would roll and pat the dough so fast. She probably didn't use recipes. When she was asked how she made her vegetable soup she would always smile and say, "Oh, a little this and that"---it was always so good. In later years she displayed a sense of humor."
