Maria "Ria" Meyburgh (1966 - 2004)

Brief overview:

Ria (37), and her husband, Jeremias Myburgh (58) were attacked in their home on a Maryvlei smallholding, Brakpan, when three robbers gained entry to their home on 16th June 2004. Phillipus was murdered in the house, after which the killers then abducted Ria in the couple's red Volkswagen Golf.

She said two firearms, electrical appliances and other household goods were taken from the house before the attackers fled in the couple's Volkswagen Golf. The car was found abandoned in KwaThema on Saturday. Her body was found was found in the veld between KwaThema and Springs on Monday 21st June 2004, said East Rand police. A post-mortem examination was to be done on Tuesday to determine the cause of her death.

The couple had only been married for six weeks.

  • On 30th July 2006, Judge Aubrey Ledwaba passed sentence on the three accused. Malebo Makgetlaheng was sent to prison twice for life for the two murders while his two co-accused, Martin Mahlangu and Thabiso Ndlela, each three life sentences got. Their third sentence is for the rape of Ria.
  • During the sentencing, Ledwaba said crime had adopted "frightening proportions" whereby "innocent and law-abiding" members of society are murdered in their own homes.
