About Maria Michaelides
The first woman doctor in Cyprus was the Limassolian Maria Roussou, wife of Eraclis Michaelides. She was born in 1902 and died young, in 1955. She studied medicine at Athens University – something unheard of in Cyprus at that time – and in 1927 began to practise medicine in her home town. She practised for only a few years because when she married she stopped working. However she continued her educational, scientific and social activity by founding and acting as president of the first Association of Women Scientists of Limassol (another "first") and contributing significantly to the social education and emancipation of the women in our country.
