About Maria Ann Weeks
It has not yet been established whether Maria Ann Weeks (Smith ?) (Shepperson) who was in South Africa in 1825, when she married James Weeks, was related to Benjamin Murrell Shepperson's (1779-1857) family who emigrated to South Africa around 1842.
Maria Ann Shepperson was born in Oxford Street, London on 5th May 1797. Baptised 15 May 1797 at St Georges Street, Hanover Square, London. Her parents were William Shepperson and Mary Ann Elborough. Her mother appears to have died shortly after she was born and it seems her father remarried on 1st Dec 1798 at St Georges Street, Hanover Square, London to Sabina Strong. It is not known when Maria Ann emigrated to South Africa but at some stage before or after she may have married a Mr Smith because she was referred to as Maria Ann SMITH when she married James Weeks.. No evidence of Mr Smith has yet been found.
The marriage date as per the St. George Register: Entry #85 is 14 February 1825 with witnesses Richard Walker, C Penny and Wm Howard.Officiating minister was Rev William Boardman. St George's Matrimonial Court Minutes : Film No. 1886513. Entry #89 : 5/2/1825.Husband: James WEEKS, 35, England, "has been married before; entered into Security for the portion of the Child of his former marriage". Wife: Maria Ann SMITH, 27, Protestant, England.
