Maria Weilbach (1928 – 2010)

Brief overview:

Maria (81), a retired dairy farmer, was brutally assaulted by two former employees on 22rd December 2010. The attackers bludgeoned her with a sharp object over her head and hands. Constable Magauta Serati said the elderly woman had sustained serious injuries and open wounds were visible on her body, and that a sharp object had been used. Marie was taken to Sebokeng Hospital where she was connected to life support, but passed the following day. She was already brain dead.

This came after a severance package dispute between Marie's grandson, Eon Viljoen (26) , the farm manager, and two former workers - Mhlushwa Martin Khoza (22), and Mbongiseni Praisegod Hornsby (27). After Viljoen paid the ex-employees, he fired them. Viljoen was out at the time of the attack, but arrived back to find the kitchen door open. Khoza and Hornsby were waiting for him. One immediately fired a shot from a shotgun without saying a word, Viljoen fired back, both shots missed. The worker fired again, and Vijoen shot the man in the head. The other stormed towards him with a steel pipe, and Viljoen shot him as well. Police said three cases of murder were being investigated.
