About Maria de Diamant (Breuer)

Deported in 1944 to Auschwitz with her husband, Laszlo Diamant, her sister Klari and her parents from the Lucenec, Slovakia ghetto. Assigned with Klari to a munitions labor camp, Duderstadt, after a brief period at Bergen Belsen; they were transported in early 1945 to Theresienstadt, weeks before liberation by the Red Cross and the Russian army. It is believed that Laszlo Diamant was murdered by the SS at Pusztavám, Móri, Fejér, Hungary, along with other pharmacists and physicians. She and Klari survived arrival at Theresienstadt because of the ministrations of her sister-in-law, Franzi Samel's, sister, Eva Ulrichova (Samel), also interned there. Maria moved to Uruguay to be near her brother, Dr Alexander Breuer, and his family. She developed a successful fashion manufacturing business there, selling garments to major Montevideo boutiques and stores and after retirement developed considerable skill as a Gobelin-type tapestry weaver.
