History
Mariah DeMill · 2 February 2017, Mariah De Mill from the De Mille Family History and Genealogy Compiles by Issa Teeples Stapley
Mariah De Mill Funk was born the 12th of May 1820, at Colesville, Broome County, New York. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1832. She with her folks were driven out of New York and went to Missouri where they were persecuted and driven from there. She was married in 1841 to Daniel Buckley Funk. They lived in Father, Abraham Funk’s place, 22 miles northeast of Quincy, Illinois for awhile. In 1843 Daniel joined the Church. In 1847 they sold out and were driven with other Saints to Pisgah. In 1848 they came to Salt Lake City. The next fall they were called to settle Sanpete County. They arrived in Manti in November and lived in dugouts the south side of where the temple now stands. In the spring they battled rattlesnakes, but not one person was bitten. Mariah in later years made hooked rugs which were called by some the most beautiful in the world. One of them (owned by Pearl Edwards, Mariah’s granddaughter) has been used for over fifty years and is still one of the finest hand-made rugs in the world.
