OBITUARY:

Longfellow's Niece Dies in Mine Town

SONORA, Jan. 23. - Mrs. Marian Longfellow Morris, 75 years old, niece of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and herself a poet of note, author and translator, died early this morning at the home of her son, Henry W. Morris, at Shawmut, a little mining town between here and Groveland, and site of the famous old Shawmut mine. Mrs. Morris had lived in Shawmut a number of years, and living there in 1905 brought out a book of verse that had wide sale. She was born in Portland, Me., the daughter of Stephen Longfellow, brother of the poet. Her girlhood was spent in Brookline, Mass., where she did her first writing. Mrs. Morris is survived by two sons and a daughter. The funeral will be held Thursday in Sonora, and the body will be taken to Oakland for cremation. [Oakland Tribune 23 Jan 1924]
