About Marian Lennox Simmonds

Some of these note are now (Oct 2010) irrelevant as much other work has been done around "gran" - I have left them here however as something else - especially the Marjorie aspect may surface later.

--------------------------------

Scotland - Australia - New Zealand

A Lady with a very hard to nail down past, but my great grandmother all the same:

What do we know:

---------------------------

Born - Marion Lennox Caldow approx 1879

Had a daughter Janet Hodge Caldow 1897 - father unknown

Possibly Had another Daughter - Probably named Marjorie in Australia (Mum's recollection?)

Married George Filmer in 1901

Had a daughter Raeil Hodge Filmer in 1901

Had a son George Lennox Filmer in 1903

Remarried "Pop Simmonds" after husband George Filmer died in 1932

Had a sister that mum refers to as aunt "tene"

She raised Jenny Caldow (probably "tene's" daughter.

Marjorie (Australia) later married and became Marjorie Ackland - Possibly?

She died as Marion Simmonds in 1968

What can we safely "assume"

-------------------------------------------

The 2 daughters (born NZ) that we have good records for both had HODGE as their middle name - this generally indicates that her mother was a Hodge

Her own middle name and the middle name of her son George was LENNOX - this sometimes indicates that her grandparents had Lennox in their name. I have a Marion Lennox married to William Caldow - Marion is their Grandaughter.

Janet Hodge (her daughter) if tradition was followed, was most likely named after Marions mother - Janet Murdoch Hodge

It stands to reason then that Marjorie was her 2nd Daughter - probably born 1897-1901 (after Janet - Before Raiel)

Originally she was from Scotland [according to mum]

Had a sister that mum refers to as Aunt Tene - could be christene christine or tina? At some stage worked at woolen mills in napier [along with nana]

Note: ** name is spelt as Marion Lennore Caldon

to George Filmer on NZBDM marriage certificate 1901/5707 **

  • * I since believe caldow and caldon were interchangeable and i guess lennox and lennore are a bit the same**

She remarried [name change to simmonds] after george died [1932] 'Pop' Simmonds had a brother Jack (Mum called uncle) who was married to Lill (Lillian?) who had three girls;

June (poss married to a Severnesen - still alive)

Peggy

Eileen

Mum remembers Aunt Lill as a bit of a neatness freak.

Marion lived with her daughter just below the property at 11 smale tce napier [ i presume #9 or #13]

She died when i was a teenager

Gran had another daughter in Australia - not sure when in the timeline. This daughter was Marjorie - hence mum's name. Mum is quite definite this is Gran's daughter. Aunt Marjorie married and became Marjorie Ackland

17th Jan - now mum's not so sure that Marjorie was Gran's daughter, she was an aunt but maybe not Gran's child.

=====

MUMS other tips she gave...

Marion Filmer (Gran) had a sister (is this Mary Bartlett/Caldow? Did she have a previous marriage then?) Mum doesn't know Mary - didn't know Gran had a sister.

However there was a Christine Caldow (pronounced Kildoo) who had a daughter called Jenny out of wedlock who was raised by Gran i think. Christine (Mum knew her as Tina) married the unknown Bartlett who Mum thinks was a traffic cop. No-one knew Jenny was Christine's kid till Jenny married.

Jenny married James Maggach (pronounced Mogga) and had two boys - Bobby (still alive - he and Mum send xmas cards if you want an address) and Ian.

Somewhere in the mix is a George or Jack Wright and an Aunt Rose on the Smale/Filmer side. Mum remembers them vaguely.

Also remembers the names Fippard, and Hilda English dredged up from somewhere in her family.

GRAN - might have had a child out of wedlock

Caldon or Caldow (depending on who wrote it down) was her maiden name.

Janet Hodge Caldon was born in 1897 [Mother] Marion [Father] not recorded - Gran would have been 18

--

Jenny Hodge Bell Caldow was born in 1906 [Mother] Christina [Father] not recorded

Jenny Bell married James Alexander Moggach in 1928
