About Marianne Musser Long
Dr. Marianne Sharp Long, principal, professor and former education official dies at 69: Dr. Marianne Musser Sharp Long passed away Friday, January 7, 2011, in Sandy, Utah. Marianne was born July 1, 1941, in Salt Lake City, to Heber Cannon Sharp and Mary Musser. She spent her childhood in Logan, Utah, graduating from Logan High and then Utah State University with a degree in elementary education. She moved to Las Vegas in 1963 to do her student teaching and it was there she met and married Lloyd K Long. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints August 24, 1965. She completed her master's degree at Utah State before starting her family. She dearly loved children and passed that love on to her own six, as well as countless others she influenced over the years.
She had many callings in the LDS church, most focused on teaching children. She served as stake Primary president for ten years and was very active in Boy Scouts, earning the Silver Beaver award for her dedication to that program. She also loved music and played the piano and organ beautifully. She accompanied thousands of church members as they sang in meetings, always with grace and in the spirit of service. Marianne was a gifted teacher and worked tirelessly in education throughout her life, running a small preschool for years in her own home when her children were very young and then eventually moving back into public education in 1989.
She worked at New Horizons Center for Learning, then at John S. Park Elementary as vice principal before earning her doctoral degree in education at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. She became principal of Lewis E. Rowe Elementary in 1991 and finally ended her career at Will Beckley Elementary. Marianne was elected to the Nevada State Board of Education in 1982 and served for twelve years, including a term as president. She also taught masters students getting their teaching degrees at the University of Phoenix. Marianne was preceded in death by her beloved husband, "K" as well as her parents; and her eldest brother, Heber.
She is survived by five of her siblings, Ed, Kathy, Carol, Larry and Allan; and all six of her children, Suzanne Foster (Craig) of Layton, Utah, Laurence (Renee) of Las Vegas, Kenneth (Jennifer) of Henderson, Merrill (Michelle) of Pleasant Hill, California, Marybeth of Draper, Utah, and Douglas (Marla) of Provo, Utah. Marianne also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren, Robert, Shannon, Sierra, Senia, Sage, Taylor, Nathan, Rachel, Heidi, Kaylee, Kyle, Cannon, Eden and Jacqueline. They truly were the light in her life. Viewing will be 5-9 p.m. Friday, January 14, at Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Boulevard North in Las Vegas. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 15, at the LDS chapel, 1525 Guilford Drive, Henderson, with a family viewing starting at 10 a.m. Marianne will be interred at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Las Vegas.
