Marion Neil

Marion does not appear on the family tree handed down the family. Found her originally on FamilySearch.org.

In the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Marion is nine months old and living with her parents and siblings in George Street, Parish of St Quivox, Ayrshire. The surname is incorrectly spelled as 'Buchamen' throughout.

In the 1851 census taken on the night of 30/31 March, Marion is 10 and living with her mother, two older brothers and a great aunt at Loans, about seven miles north of Ayr, where her mother is a victualler.

Ten years later, in the 1861 census, she is 20, married to Loans innkeeper William Neil (said to be 25), and has two young sons, Joseph and William. Joseph is stated to be 13, which seems unlikely unless his father was older than 25 and had a previous wife. Marion's mother (63) is still living there.

(1871 census - family not found) In the 1881 census, the family are in Ayr Street, Troon. Sons Joseph and William are not listed. The children are Robert (14) - a clerk, Lilias (12), John (9) and Marion (1). William Sr is now stated to be 55 - 15 yrs older than Marion.

In the 1891 census Marion (50) is the head of the household, now living at 28 Templehill, Troon [today a shop selling fresh soup, sandwiches and rolls]. Also living there are her daughter Lilias (22) - shopkeeper, son John (19) - painter, daughter Marian (11) - scholar, and son Archie (8) - scholar. Meantime, husband William has not died but is living as a boarder in Ayr.

It is possible Marion died before 1901, as Lilias and Archie are found in that census living with their father in Ayr.
