About Marion Forbes Richards

Marion's legal name at birth was Edith Marion Forbes. She was named in honor of her mother but always called Marion. When she married Jim, she simply dropped the Edith and made Forbes her middle name.

Marion Richards, born Edith Marion Forbes in Cleveland, Ohio, passed away after a very brief illness on December 29, 2014. She was exactly 3 months shy of 98 years of age. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, James Austin Richards, Jr.

Marion studied music as an adolescent, and graduated from Oberlin College (where she met Jim Richards) with a degree in music. She taught music briefly before starting a family and becoming a homemaker. Her musical gift was shared with others throughout her long life.

Marion and Jim resided in Durham, NC, where Jim earned his PhD in Physics; then Bucknell, PA, Olivet, MI, Swarthmore, PA, Delhi-Treadwell, NY, and finally Pleasant Hill, TN.

Marion worked actively throughout her adulthood to elevate the quality of life for all, and to enhance the well-being of the family of mankind. She worked with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and was tireless in her activities to support the implementation of controls on nuclear weapons; to support racial, gender and ethnic equality; to support a clean and healthy environment, and to nurture her family and friends. She taught and gave unconditional love, and graced the lives of all she met. Marion was an enthusiastic gardener, and enjoyed bountiful fruits of her labor, both aesthetic and delicious. She was very interested in understanding health and nutrition. She was active in Quaker Meeting in the communities in which she lived. She generously shared her appreciation and love of beauty, nature and life wherever she went.

Marion is survived by her four children, Barbara Forbes Richards Grey, Ann Elizabeth Richards Jacob, James Austin Richards, III, and Clark Read Richards, as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Marion will be remembered and she lives-on through the deep and enduring love of her family, and through her place in the hearts and minds of all those whose lives were brightened by her presence.
