Marius Pretorius (1965 - 2006)

Brief overview:

Marius (41), had just driven up the driveway of his home, in Verwoerdpark, Alberton, with his wife and children, just after 20h00, on 26th December 2006, when hijackers in a white Mazda pulled up behind them.

A man jumped out and ran towards them in the garage with a pistol. Marius sped backwards and hit the hijackers car. The hijacker ran around the car and fired a shot. Marius leaned over to protect his wife, Chanté and his daughter and the bullet hit him above the shoulder.

Even though the hijackers' car was badly damaged in the collision, they sped away.

Chanté rushed to the hospital with Marius on the back seat. Paramedics declared him dead on arrival.

  • Marius had survived three previous attacks on his life. In 1998 he was hijacked near Mapleton, Boksburg, and stabbed eight times. The hijackers drove him around and later threw him into a 15 metre deep well and left him for dead. He was rescued by farm workers the next day when they heard him calling for help.
  • During another incident in November 2004, Marius was on the M2 highway near Denver, east Johannesburg, he was wounded in the leg when he was attacked by robbers. The third incident was in February 2006, when he and Chanté were at a shop when armed men raided it.
