Mark Regal (1970 - 2020)

Brief overview:

Mark (50), a game farmer, was shot dead on farm Thelma, outside Odendaalsrus, Welkom, Free State, on 11th November 2020, around 19h40. Mark was inside the house and his wife, Angela (45) was outside on the porch when the attackers struck. When Mark heard Angela scream and he rushed outside and there were four armed perpetrators. Mark's brother, Nathan, said the shooting was captured on a security camera, and his brothers arms were in the air at the time he was shot. Angela shot dead one of the suspects, and the others fled.

Police spokesperson Thandi Mbambo said, "two men arrived at the farm while the farmer's wife was sitting outside. She allegedly shot one of the men and as her husband came out of the house, he was shot by the other suspect who then fled."

Farmers in the area were asked to go to the game farm so they could help search for the other suspect. Police and emergency services were at the scene, as well as the K9 dog unit.

Police spokesperson Brig. Motantsi Makehele said two cases of murder are being investigated.

Mark leaves behind his wife Angela and two children.

Mark's memorial service will take place on 22nd November. A Facebook live video.

  • 26/05/2023: Khulekani Kaizer Mthethwa (45) appeared in the Magistrate's court Welkom on Friday 26th May 2023. According to spokesperson Capt. Stephen Thakeng, Mthethwa was located in the prison after a long, protracted investigation. He has been in prison since 2021 for a business robbery. "The suspect was arrested and charged for the murder of Regal," confirms Thakeng. Mthethwa. The case was adjourned until June 2 when he will formally apply for bail. Additional Biographical Information:

Mark Regal was the son of Joe Regal a well-known taxidermist and businessman in Odendaalrus.
