Mark Shafto, baptised 25 March 1601; barrister of Gray's Inn; Recorder of Newcastle 1645; purchased Whitworth; died 23 February 1659; married Mary Legard, daughter of Thomas Legard, Merchant of Newcastle; married on 7 February 1630. They had issue:

• Robert Shafto, baptised 13 January 1631; died as an infant
• Jane Shafto, baptised 11 April 1633; married 10 January 1652 at St. John's Newcastle, William Strother of Fowberry, Northumberland
• Sir Robert Shafto of Whitworth, baptised 13 May 1634, barrister of Gray's Inn; Recorder of Newcastle 1660; Knighted at Whitehall 26 June 1670; Sergeant-at-law 1674; buried 25 May 1705 at The Cathedral Church of St Nicholas, St Nicholas Square, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 1PF 54.97000, -1.61111 MI [Memorial Inscription?]; married Catherine Widdrington, daughter and co-heir of Sir Thomas Widdrington of Cheeseburn Grange, Northumberland; married on 18 July 1664 at St. Pancras [Old Church], Co. • Thomas Shafto, a Hamburg Merchant; baptised 16 July 1639; buried 29 August 1678

Mark Shafto, Esq., barrister-at-law, of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn. 1648: Recorder of Newcastle. 1652: purchased Whitworth Hall, Stanner's Lane, Spennymoor, County Durham DL16 7QX 54.707, -1.633. He married Mary Legard, daughter of Thomas Legard, of Newcastle, Merchant, and had issue. Mark Shafto died 25 February 1659, and was survived by his eldest son.
