Mark Dennis Sommer

Mark Sommer, age 64, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, March 10, 2018. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October of 2017.

He was born in Toledo, Ohio on October 1, 1953 to Barbara and Robert Sommer. Mark graduated from Thomas A. Devilbiss High School and attended Purdue University. He married the love of his life, Catherine (Freer) Sommer, in 1976. Mark retired in 2016 after over 40 years at Container Graphics Corporation where he worked as a designer and draftsman.

Mark loved racing his 1983 Volkswagen as a member of the Sports Car Club of America, Northwest Ohio Region. He took pride in being the regional safety steward and instructing safety steward classes. His racing took him across the country and he enjoyed all the people he met in the club.

In the summer months, Mark enjoyed spending time racing, riding his bicycle and vacationing at the family cabin near Houghton Lake, Michigan. He loved exploring new recipes, especially barbecue. In winter months, he enjoyed cross country skiing and tinkering in his workshop. Mark was a builder and craftsman, he especially enjoyed working with wood. His nickname was Mr. FixIt- he could fix anything or make a workaround. Mark was also a talented musician and played guitar in a band, the Harmony Hogs, throughout the Toledo area.

Mark is survived by his wife, Cathie; children, Jill Sommer, Carrie (Phillip) Coble; grandson, Phillip; father, Robert Sommer; brother, Gary (Sue) Sommer; and niece and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother.

A celebration of Mark’s life will be held at The Lodge at Strawberry Acres, 950 S. McCord Rd., Holland, OH on Sunday, May 6, 2018 between 3 and 8 p.m.

Interment will be private.
