ACCIDENT NO. 41 - June 25, 1910 – Marko Stanfel, Red Jacket Shaft.
Marko Stanfel, an Austrian Trammer, met his death on this day by a fall of vein rock fracturing his skull in two places.
An inquest was held before Justice Fisher. The following witnesses testified:
Jacob Kocjan: “I work at the Red Jacket Shaft. I was working when the deceased met with an accident. There were two parties working there, each filling a car when the rock fell, it struck the back of one of the cars and turned over on Marko. The rock came from the vein, it was about 6 feet long, 3 feet wide, 6 or 7 in thick. It looked like a good place to work, everything looked alright.”
John Kure: “I am a Timberman employed at the Red Jacket Shaft. I know the place of the accident, I had worked there all day Saturday (the accident happened on the night shift on Saturday). Examined the place all over with a staff. They blasted at dinner time and after that we barred down all loose and when we left we considered everything alright.”
John Vranich, a partner of the deceased, corroborated testimony of previous witnesses.
Verdict: That the said Marko Stanfel came to his death by a fall of vein rock at the 57th level, North Side, Red Jacket Shaft branch of C. & H. Mining Co., on the 25th day of June, 1910.”
