Markus BENEDICT O.R. (Ober Rabbiner)

Inscription on gravestone transcribed & translated into English (with warmest thanks to cousins Elisheva & Avraham)

The arc on the top of the stone:

The crying stone of our teacher, the genious and wonder of our generation, for 34 years was the glory of our congregation: Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Banet

The main text:

The memory of the righteous and holy leader of the rabbinical court of Stupava and its surroundings: Moshe-prince of the Torah, went up above and passed through the gates.

Old and young together weep and mourn. Woe unto us! The ark of God was captured and the greatest of our teachers has passed away!

The great man Moshe is gone, and they cried and eulogized him. Mordechai, the leader of our generation, the crown of his hand mastered the three pillars (of the world—referring to a Mishna, which states that the study of Torah, prayer to God, and acts of kindness are the three pillars upon which the world stands.)

He spread and taught Torah for Heaven’s sake and had disciples.

He shed tears when he prayed and comforted the sick. He reached out to all and made a deep impression on his surroundings.

He often fasted like the holy ones. In his lifetime he saw all his children were righteous, Upholding the Torah commandments and the lessons of their teacher, Moshe.

The father of children was taken above. He knew the Jewish laws and teachings. He toiled in Torah study and his explanations which were as sweet as a honeycomb.

He wrote a Torah scroll which he mastered in full; both the hidden and revealed aspects, The great man, Mordechai.

At the bottom of the stone, the date of his death is 24 Kislev (the month roughly coinciding with Dec.) 1850.

(N.B. this date does not exactly correlate with that given in main sources ...)
