According to the personal recollections of Betty Collins (Helen Elizabeth Cock-Collins), "Martha had quite ordinary brown eyes(I think), and was a rather serious, even stern woman." However, also "Granny Collins [Martha] took the opportunity to culturally enrich me, and besides teaching me to make Welsh Rarebit, Shortbread, Cheese Straws, and Brawn, she also spent some hours on the piano, singing Scottish traditional songs like Annie Laurie and You take the high Road…Bonnie bonnie banks of Lock Lomond; My Luv is lak a Red Red Rose. Comin thro the Rye, Roamin’ thro the Gloamin’ and even ‘I belong ta Glascow’. She brought tears to my eyes with ‘There’s nae place like hame’..."
