Willy and Martha owned a wire factory in Czechoslovakia and were quite wealthy: they lived in Pilsen and were friendly with Kokoschka, who painted her picture several times. When the war broke, their son Richard was already living in Australia, but they themselves had to flee to Prague, where they were trapped by the German occupation.
