About Martha Elizabeth Reynolds

Obituary (from unknown source probably Church newsletter)
Sister Martha Elizabeth, wife of G. A. Reynolds, was born in Mississippi, February 11, 1848; died in Grant County, Arkansas, January 13, 1918. She was married to G. A. Reynolds, November 30, 1864. To them were born thirteen children, ten of whom are still living. She professed a hope in Christ at the early age of eleven, joined the Methodist church immediately after and lived a most devoted Christian life all of her days. I never had the privilege of meeting her, but everyone who knew her and her sweet-spirited life, says she was beyond question a Christian, and that her life was one to be worthy of imitation. Our faith in the power of God to save comes through the faith we have in others whom God has saved. This good woman's faith in God constrained many others to have faith in Him.
Her friends tell me that her interest in others never grew weary, and her efforts to help others never ceased. She was always interested in the welfare of others, as she was in the welfare of her own.
She was a faithful member of the Church which she loved, a true friend to her pastor, andher home was his home; she was a peaceful and helpful neighbor, she was a true and patient mother, and a very affectionate wife; and, best of all, she was a meek and lowly follower of her Lord and Master. She died as she had lived -- in triumphant faith in the living Christ.
   T. F. Hughes, Pastor.
Note: Martha Elizabeth's death certificate says she was born February 10, 1849 and the "medical" certificate of death is January 20, 1918. Cemetery records state birthdate as Feb 11, 1848 and death as January 13, 1918. Census records for 1860 and 1870 show her to be born in 1849.
Birth and death dates taken from death certificate NOT cemetery tombstone in Philadelphia Cemetery, Prattsville, Grant County, Arkansas. Obituary will be same source as cemetery records which is incorrect. Gaylan, Galen, Galin, Gayland, etc. are all spellings used by various family members as each wrote what they "heard." Take your pick as to what you want to use.
Martha Elizabeth is difficult to trace. Fortunately, I received much information from notes kept by Mary Jane Henson (my grandmother) and other family members. However, proving facts OUTSIDE family information and interviews is difficult because census records are not accurate. Fortunately, my grandmother, Mary Jane Henson, knew her grandmother who was Martha Elizabeth Morton. My grandmother also kept names of children and their addresses until she died in 1988. That has helped considerably to tie other relatives together correctly. -- Bernice Dehl
Martha Elizabeth and Galen were born in Mississippi. Alpheus (Alvis) Reynolds was born in Alabama. Alexander Peden Morton was born in Tennessee. There are a LOT of Reynolds and Morton descendents in Arkansas: especially around Grant, Saline, Dallas, Hot Spring, and Pulaski counties, especially Saline and Grant counties.
1860 census lists birthplace as Mississippi. 1870 Census lists birthplace as Mississippi. 1880 census lists birthplace as Mississippi and both parents birthplace as "Dont Know." 1870 Census lists birthplace as Mississippi. 1900 birthplace is Texas which is incorrect. Family moved there right after she was born. 1910 census lists birthplace as Mississippi. Father's birthplace is Georgia and mother's is England. The 1910 census shows that she had 13 children with 10 living. All 10 living children have been accounted for. Note that the uncertainty in birthplaces can be explained because her father moved around alot. He lived in South Carolina?, Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas and Arkansas.
