About Martha Jane Stringham

Daughter of Dabney Keele and Elizabeth Bracken
Jeremiah Stringham while young moved with his family to Holden, UT. Here his mother died and the father took the family to Echo Canyon, UT where they lived on a farm for several years.
Jeremiah met Martha Jane Keele when he was 22 years of age and courted and married her. Until they moved to the Big Horn Basin, Martha took care of four of her (William Augustus Keele and deceased Cleopatra Burgess) brother's motherless children. Her home was always open to homeless children.
When Jeremiah and Martha's fourth child was 9 months old, Jeremiah was called on a mission for the LDS church to the North Central States. With the help of some of her family, Martha farmed, milked cows, made cheese and canned berries to support herself and to keep her husband in the mission field.
On May 7, in the early 1900's, with two wagons, one of which Martha drove, and a small herd of cattle and horses, Jeremiah and his little family started out for the Big Horn Basin. They were four months making the journey, and spent their first year in Tensleep before coming to Lovell.
Jeremiah and Martha were friends to everyone, and Martha was often called out to help tend the sick. They were both hard working members of the community, and many depended on their advice and wisdom, gained through hard work and the school of experience.
Jeremiah's eyesight failed him several years before his death and he was confined to his home. Martha was his faithful companion and all who knew her loved her. At the time of her death, Jeremiah was not able to care for himself and went to live with his daughter, Zela, and her husband Glenn Butler, and lived with them until his passing.
Such loving care and devotion by a faithful daughter shows the love that lifts the heart blesses all who behold it.
They were stalwart citizens of the community and their children have carried on in the same spirited manner.
