Marthie Erasmus (1947 - 2010)

Brief overview:

Marthie (63), and her husband Chris Erasmus (63), were attacked by three men on the patio of their home on their farm Hartbeesfontein in the Moedwil area near Koster, North West Province on 29th November 2010.

Chris was tied to a chair in the kitchen and assaulted them while plundering the house and taking whatever they could. The attackers tied up Marthie's hand and feet and laid her on her stomach on a bed. She was bludgeoned to death with a 16-pound sledge hammer. The attackers threatened to kill Chris as well, and he asked them why they would want to kill him as well, he told he had to look after their children. The attackers told him to 'watch out', and then they left.

Erasmus struggled for a long time to free himself. He went to the room where Marthie and found her lying on her stomach covered in blood. Erasmus drove to the farm foreman and used his phone to contact his son. He had sustained injuries to head, particularly his eye as he had been punched and hit repeatedly with a piece of wood. He was taken to hospital. Erasmus had been receiving chemotherapy for glandular cancer.

  • The attackers stole weapons, jewellery, about R10 000, a microwave oven, mobile phones, clothes, Christmas gifts and a Toyota bakkie (pick-up truck) they fled from the scene. The bakkie, which was in an accident after a flight and was a wreck, was later found abandoned in the Rustenburg area.
