DISCUSSION REGARDING MARTHINUS LOURENS JOHANNES BORN 1832'S PARENTAGE

Jan Marthinus Blomerus, b2....h1 8th cousin 28 Mei 2015 om 6:07 nm.

Hi there Y Drost,

This is my public profile, so I am in a conflict on what to say. Would prefer if we can make this a discussion on the profile mentioned or else if we do pm.

But yes, I do not have solid proof for that link as you may be well aware.

According to SAG v8 p 486, Marthinus Lourens in all probability was part of the Great Trek. For me that entails that some of the birth records would not exist. (And here, I do not prefer the approach of a small minority to leave gaps on Geni.) A common search of the specific Marthinus Lourens name would yield that there were no other Prinsloos born earlier (and a valid parent, except e6) with those names in SAG, while on the Van der Merwe side those names are also not found.

Furthermore, e6's children end with f8 born 1829/30 in SAG, so in all likelihood your ancestor was born during the Great Trek to these parents.

Lastly, to pass on the name of the father in traditional sense, you have had to have 3 sons. This would indeed be the case here.

Finally, the grandfather had no other sons which could have fathered a son born 1832.

I am happy (in the sense that I have no regrets!) if you unlink to these parents regardless of the above, however, there are no stronger candidates in my opinion and for the time being.

Regards Jan

I replied vandag om 12:00 vm 4 JUN 2015

Hello Jan, I agree that my MLJ PRINSLOO born 1832 was in all probability b2 or b3 (depending on source used)c3d6e6's son, but I have a number of issues which I am focusing on at the moment which arose from linking my tree with that of MLJ's other two sons using the genview tree.

1. I have no first hand source for my MLJ PRINSLOO's birth date. The 1832 date comes from the genview website and the MyPeoplePuzzle.net website. Their sources are not known. From his marriage date of 29 OCT 1853 (also from the MyPeoplePuzzle.net website), as well as the calculated birth date of the oldest son (also MLJ) of 1854 (from his death notice TAB/MHG/LEER/0/01/7717/1 of 1905) and assuming he was 16 years of age when married, I can calculate his latest birth year as 1838.

2. I also have a problem when comparing the birth dates of the three sons. The first two are close together in the 1850's, but the last son, my Willem Jacobus was born in 1873. Thus there is almost a twenty year gap.

I have ordered and await the book "Voortrekkerstamouers" by J. C. VISAGIE which I hope will assist in determining my MLJ PRINSLOO's father with more certainty. Given that the documents indicate that the oldest son was born in the Transvaal according to his DN and his age, I have also concluded that he was part of the Great Trek. My plan is to see which PRINSLOO trekked with which leader as where they settled should correspond with my PRINSLOO's.

I think we need to unlink them for now, which will avoid someone else who is unfamiliar with the background using the link for a fact, but that a note be placed in the About Me section of both profiles stating that the link is the most obvious, but remains as yet unproven. I am not a Geni Pro user, therefor, I cannot unlink them, thus may I please ask you to do so? I will also place our discussions on the profiles so others may see them so that everyone is informed of our research.

Kindest regards, Y. DROST

Goeie naand almal

Ek kontak julle rakende die volgende profiel: https?//www·geni·com/people/Marthinus-Lourens-Johannes-Prinsloo-SV-PROG/6000000000239343771

A New occurence of Vanadinite in Marico district, Transvaal

https://journals.co.za/docserver/fulltext/sajg/23/01/2514.pdf?expir...

A NEW OCCURHE~CE OF VANADINI'I'E IN MARICO DISTRICT, TRANSVAAl,. 59
A NEW OCCURRENCE OF V ANADINITE IN THE1\fARICO
DISTRICT, TRANSVAAL.
(Read April 26th, 1920.)
By P. A. Wagner, D.Eng., B.Sc., F.G.S., and
B. de C. Marchand, B.A., D.Se.
(Communicated by permission of the Honourable the Minister for Mines
and Industries.)
Vanadinite, the chloro-vanadate of lead, is found in the oxidised
zone of a number of the lead deposits in the 1:Iarico District, its
occurrence having been noted by several writers.
Actually the mineral has been recorded from the old lead mine on
the farm Rhenosterhoek No. 211, the Doornhoek lead mine, the lead
v;orkings on the farm Bokkraal No. 300, and the occurrence on the farm
Buffelshoek No. 264. It is also stated to have been found in the upper
levels of the Witkop mine, but of this the writer could obtain no
authentic confirma,tion.
Of the occurrences named only the Doornhoek mine has so far
yielded the mineral in I commercial quantities. Here vanadinite, in
Hssociation with cerussite, pyromorphite, mini urn and massicot,l is
feund lining cavities and vughs in the main are body. Several of these
have been encountered recently, and from the, largest of them, a flat
inclined cavity about 15 feet in length, it is estimated that fully a ton
of vanadinite will be recovered. rrhe mineral occurs in small, "vellformed hexagonal crystals averaging about 1~ millimetres in diameter.
Its colour ranges from reddish brown to ruby red and its lustre is subadamantine, being superior to that of the Kafferskraal vanadinite to be
described below.
The new occurrence forming the subject of the present note was
discovered about three months ago in the south-western corner of the
f::!,rm Kafferskraal No. 214, situated 14 miles due east of Ottoshoop. It
is unique in that vanadinite is the principal are mineral present, galena,
cerussite and the other minerals, which vanadinite accompanies in the
occurrences previously mentioned, being present in subordinate
quantity only. The deposit is of considerable size as vanadium deposits
are reckoned, and there can be no question that vanadinite will shortly
figure in the already very long list of the Transvaal's mineral products.
1 So far as the writer is aware, -the occurrence of this mineral in the
Doornhoek ,Mine has not hitherto been recorded. It is found as a secondary
incrustation on minium and cerussite encrusting galena.
GO TRANSACTIONS OF THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF SOUTH AFRICA.
It is situated in the uppermost portion of the Dolomite series of
the rrransvaal System in a bedded deposit of soft blackish-brown
manganese earth or wad that is generally assumed to have resulted from
the replacement of the dolomite along certain lines. 2 Similar manganese
earth forms the country rock of the Doornhoek lead mine and of the
old lead mine on Rhenosterhoek No. 211.
Beds of a highly altered calc-silicate rock containing a good deal
of. wollastonite underlie and are interbedded with the manganiferous
earth, and layers of chert also occur in it. Chert and normal dolomite
are exposed within a few hundred feet of the deposit on every side.
The layers of manganese earth dip dcwn at an angle of about· 150
to the east. The bedding planes follow a wavy course and minor folds
have in places been superimposed on the main undulations.
The vanadinite in crystals and crystal aggregates occurs in seams
and layers, up to 18 inches in thickness, following the bedding of the
wad, also in irregular pockets cutting across the bedding; in crystals
disseminated through the wad and finally encrusting the altered calcsilicate rock already referred to.
The ore of the seams is a heavy cellular rock composed of crystals
of vanadinite encrusting ferruginous earthy or clayey matter. What the
original natur::l of this ferruginous matter may have been is not clear,
but it probably contained both pyrite and galena. In some sections
of the deposit the ferruginous gangue is full of minute flakes of silvery
white mica.
rl'he vanadinite is associated in the layers and pockets with
cerussite, galena, pyromorphite, minium and massicot. Pyromorphite
and vanadinite are rarely observed in the same specimen, being to some
extent segregated into separate patches and masses. rrhis is of importance, as it indicates that portion, at any rate, of the pyromorphite,
which is naturally a deleterious constituent in an ore of this nature,
could be removed by hand picking.
The manner of occurrence of the vanadinite and associated minerals
may be best illustrated by q brief description of some of the sections
exposed in the workings. r:rhese consist of an open cutting, an incline,
tunnels, cross-cuts and prospecting pits. On the eastern wall of the
open cutting there is to be seen in descending order:
2 inches of red surface soil.
10 inches composed for the most part of hard nodules of lateritic
manganese: earth.
18 inches of reddish soil with fragments of chert.
3 to 5 inches of cellular vanadinite ore, replaced at one point by
galena partly altered to cerussite and encrusted with vanadinite
crystals.
18 inches of manganese earth.
At this point the vanadinite layer is practically horizontal. A
little farther south it dips to the south· and at the entrance to the . 2 CJ. Humphrey, A. \V., Report of the Geo.log'icaf--S;'rvey, Trans~~~l, 1908, p. 152.
A NEW OCCURRENCE OF VANADnnTE IN MARICO DISTRICT, 'rRANSVAAL. 61
undergro.md working the dip is to the west at an angle of 150. At the
€ntrance to the underground working the following section is exposed:
Manganese earth full of small scales and plates of wollastonite... 1 in.
Vanadinite ore 3 in.
:Manganese earth with remnants of altered shaly rock 6 in.
Vanadimte ore 2 m .
.lVIanganese earth lin.
V anadini te ore l in.
Decomposed calc-silicate rock 8 in.
The tw~ upper seams or vanadinite ore are seen a, few feet westsouth-w-est of this exposure to coalesce, giving rise to a single seam
about 4 inches thick, which itself gives out completely a little farther
on, being replaced by another seam.
The maximum observed thickness of the vanadinite ore in any
single layer is 18 inches. In some sections the aggregate thickness of
the several layers is over 2 feet.
THE ORE MINERALS.
Of the ore minerals present galena, occurs in the vanadinite layers
in irregular flattened masses up to 4 inches across. These invariably
show marginal alteration to massive dark coloured cerussite, and in
some specimens only small remnants of the galena. remain. Cerussite
also. occurs in well-formed tabular crystals. Minium, the red oxide of
lead, was noted as an encrustation on brown clayey matter impregnated
with cerussite, and earthy massicot-the yellow oxide-is also present
in some sections of the deposit. Pyrqmorphite o.ccurs in well-formed
prismatic crystals up to ~. inches in length, generally aggrega.ted in
pa.rallel or branching groups, also in irregular botryoidal masses and
crusts. The prism faces of the crystals are generally stria. ted parallel
t() the vertical axis. The colour of the mineral ranges from yellow in
some of the botrynida.l crusts, through gre;yish green to dark olive green.
The lustre is resin ous.
The vanadinite forms sharp edged hexagonal crystals ranging in
size from almost misroscopic dimensions to a. diameter of quarter of an
inch. The crystals as a rule are tabular para.llel to 0001 or equidimensional, crystals o.f prismatic habit also occur, but are rare. The
following forms are present: OOOI , 10Io, and tOll. The
pyramidal faces are very small, being just, visible under a hand lens. *
. The colour of the mineral va.ries, and may be yellowish-brown, brown,
orange-red o.r deep brownish-red. The orange-red and brownish-red
varieties are translucent. The lustre is resinous, being inferior to that
of the Doornhoek vanadmite.

  • The pyramidal faces were identifie.d in the laboratory of Professor A.

Young, at Capetown, by Mr. D. J. Malan, B.A., who determined the angle
101(000l to be 39" 30'. The axial ratio calculated from this angle is C= ·7139.

The vanadinite layers have been proved to extend over an elliptical
area measuring approximately 120 feet by 45 feet, the longer axis of
the ellipse striking a few degrees ,vest of north. The greatest depth
attained in the wcrkings is 35 feet. '11w vanadinite does not appear to

giving out a.s they are followed downward.
It is estimated that several hundred tons of the mineral are
actually in sight.
Vanadinite is also exposed in a prospecting shaft situated about
50 feet east-north-east of the entrance to the main workings and is said
to have been found in an excavation situated some little distance to the
nc'rth of. the main working.
The prE·senc,~ of the pyromol1)hite notwithstanding, the exploitation
of the depc)sits should yield handsome profits, as conditions are favourable to cheap mining and the ore is very amenable to concentration,
tests carried out in lVIr. Blane's mill on Witkop having shown that
there is no difficulty in obtaining, by simple treatme:qt on jigs and
