AGED STONE MASON DEAD
Martin Barwarth, 85, and Blind for Thirty-Two Years, Died of Dropsy And Old Age Monday.
Martin Barwarth, 85 years old, a native of Austria but for more than fifty years a resident of Edina, died about 9 o'clock Monday morning at his home here in the northwest part of town of dropsy and old age. He had been blind for thirty-two years and an invalid for the last year, unable to leave his chair, at times suffered keenly, but ever patient and unusually cheerful for one so sorely afflicted.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 o'clock yesterday morning at St. Joseph's Church by Rev. D. J. Donovan, the pastor. Interment was in the new Catholic cemetery by the side of the grave of his wife, who died seven years ago.
Three children survive, Mrs. F. J. Bockenfeld of Davenport, Ia., Jonas Barwarth of St. Joseph, Mo., and Mrs. H. P. Hogan of Kansas City, all of whom have taken turns about in remaining here and caring for their father since the death of their mother. Five grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Barwarth was born in County Felkirk, Austria, November [sic] 1 [sic], 1838 [sic], and came to the United States in October, 1865, first stopping in the eastern states, where he lived until 1870. In 1872 he came to Edina, which has since been his home and where he was married in the old Catholic Church, which has been gone for many years, by Reverend Stempker in 1874 to Miss Mary Ritz. To them were born the three children who survive.
Before becoming blind Mr. Barwarth was a stone mason, and for many of the older buildings all over Knox County still have foundations and other rock work done by his hands.
Mrs. Hogan and Mr. and Mrs. Bockenfeld were here for the funeral.'
