Martin Richmond Haydon, beloved son of Frank and Bertha Haydon gave his life for his country Dec 19, 1944, at the age of 23 years. Martin died in the line of duty when the destroyer, Hull, was lost in a typhoon off Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines. He joined the Navy on March 22, 1942 at the age of 20 years. After four weeks of boot camp he was assigned to the destroyer, Hull, and sent immediately into action at Guadalcanal. With his ship Martin was in 13 engagements within 33 months. The final action of this gallant lad and this gallant ship, was to help clear the way for General McArthur to return to the Philippines. They were returning from this task when the typhoon struck.
