Martin came from Revel, a Swedish town in the gulf of Finland, in Estonia, which was taken from the Swedes by the Russians in 1710. He m. ( 1) in N. Y. city, 31 March, 1663, Lysbeth Harmens; (2) Emmerentie Dewitt ( sister to Tjerk Claessen); had only two sons and two daughters, who are known:
- ANNETJE, bap. 1 March, 1665.
- MARRITJE. bap. 12 Dec., 1665.
- NICHOLAS, m. 30 Dec., 1704, Jannitie Crispell (dau. of Antond), b. Fe b. 1686, d. **** Feb., 1752.
- ZACHARIAS, of Shawangunk, Ulster Co., N. Y., m. 19 Oct., 1707, Hest er [p.410] Bruyn, d. 1744

Second Generation 2. Martinas2 HOFFMAN (Herman1) (#1449) was born in Revel, Gulf of Finland, about 1625?. He married twice. He married unknown 1662. ( unknown is #1458.) He married Emmerentje Claessen DEWITT May 16, 1664. (Emmerentje Claessen DEWITT is #1450.)
He served as an officer in the military in Europe, before 1650?. He resided in Ostenbenzie, Holland before 1657. He emigrated, 1657. Point of origin: Holland. He served as an officer in the military in Esopus, New York, 1659. Martinas HOFFMAN and Emmerentje Claessen DEWITT had the following children:

Martin Hoffman ( 1625 ) was born at Revel, on the Gulf of Finland, and is said to have been a Ritmaster in the army of Gustavus Adolphus. He emigrated to America in 1658, settling first in Esopus, where he assisted in a repulse of the Indians in 1658. He removed to New Amsterdam, where he became a large tax-payer, and his name appears in a directory of that city in 1661. He afterwards returned to Kingston and received a grant from the English Crown of land in the town of Kingston in 1688. He took the oath of allegiance in 1689. Although he married twice, the second wife, Emmerentje De Witt, was the mother of all his children.
