About Martin J. Messner
Accident No. 21. June 24th, Martin Messner lost his life by being struck by a piece of hanging wall rock in a stope at the 36th level north of No. 2 shaft, Hecla Branch of the Calumet and Hecla mine. Messner and five others were employed to put in timber to keep the hanging wall rock in place.
An inquest was held before Coroner Sowden.
Antoine Stehlin, boss of the timber gang, and three others who were working with Messner when the accident occurred, testified: "That they had carefully sounded the hanging wall rock before they started to work in the morning and found nothing dangerous. If there had been any loose hanging rock they would have taken it down or put some timbers against it to prevent it from falling, as they were in the same danger as Messner."
The jury returned a verdict, “That Martin Messner met his death accidentally by a fall of hanging rock at the 36th level north of No. 2 shaft, Hecla mine, while in the discharge of his duty, on the 24th day of June, 1897.”
