He joined the RNVR on the 31st December 1917 just 10 days after his 18th birthday. He trained at the Crystal Palace in London (known as HMS Victory VI) until 29th August 1918.
He then served on HMS Doon as a Telegraphist from 30th August 1918 to 2nd December 1918. HMS Doon was part of the Humber Patrol based at Immingham Dock, Grimsby and participated in counter mining operations and anti-submarine patrols. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Doon_(1904)
From 3rd December 1918 to 10th February 1919 he was stationed at "Pembroke I", Chatham
At the time of his enlistment his occupation was noted as "Laboratory Assistant"
