About Martin Ormandy

Martin Ormandy, 95, cellist who performed with the New York Philharmonic and other orchestras for three-quarters of a century. Proud that he was the oldest working orchestral musician in the United States, Ormandy last performed a month ago with the New York Pops. The brother of the better known violinist and conductor Eugene Ormandy, he was born in Budapest and studied music at the Franz Liszt Conservatory and mathematics and medicine at the university level. By 18, he was principal cellist at the Budapest Opera. Following Eugene to New York, Ormandy played cello and saxophone with theater and radio orchestras until 1929, when he joined the New York Philharmonic. He remained with the orchestra 36 years and then free-lanced with other well-known groups including the New York Chamber Symphony, the Mostly Mozart Orchestra and the orchestra of the New York Choral Society. On Tuesday in New York City.
