--------------------------------------------

Married Katherine Waldrop 14 June 1823 in Rutherford County, NC

Martin Thompson of Rutherford County NC who married Katherine Waldrop was the same Martin Thompson who

--served in the 7th Regt NC Militia, Frost's Company, in the War of 1812

--served as a bondsman for the 1819 marriage between Sally Hawkins and Jerry Garrett in Rutherford County

--married Katherine, daughter of Edmund Waldrop in 1823 in Rutherford County NC

--witnesses a will of John Ellison in 1835 in Rutherford County NC and is listed as an adjacent property owner

--migrated first to Forsyth County, GA, where he purchased two 40-acre lots of land from James Roberts 24 October 1841, with deed witnessed by K. H. Thompson and Robert Thompson ( I imagine K. H. Thompson is wife Katherine). However, he appears to have immediately lost this land, as well as two horses, a cart and a yoke of oxen, in a fi fa (writ of fieri facias) lawsuit against him by creditor William McConnell, according to a newspaper notice of 17 Dec 1841. Apparently, he was unable to pay his loan (I believe the other names on the suit, including Robert Thompson, were co-signers on the loan). Nevertheless, he and his family remained in Forsyth County, where he purchased a 40-acre lot 21 Jan 1843 from David Blackwell. Martin Thompson and family appear in the 1845 Georgia State Census and the 1850 federal census in Forsyth County. He is also listed in the 1850 Agricultural census with 120 acres, of which 50 are improved and 70 unimproved. [This makes me wonder if he did, in fact, pay off his lien for the 80 acres he bought in 1841 and didn't lose it after all.]

--moved to Browning, DeKalb County, GA where he is enumerated on the 1860 Agriculture census OS PAGE: 07, LINE NUMBER: 33, with 50 acres improved, 150 acres unimproved

--shows up in the DeKalb, Georgia Marriage Index when he married Louisa Mitchell on 5 Dec 1865 (Book 1 p 429)

--appears in the "Georgia, Returns of Qualified Voters and Reconstruction Oath Books, 1867-1869" as Martin Thompson 5 July 1867 DeKalb

--appears in the 1870 Federal Census for Georgia in Browning, DeKalb, Georgia with the following household:

  • Martin Thompson 77 Infirm SC
  • Mary C White 37 Keeping House NC
  • Catherine White 8 Illinois
  • Ida M. White 7 Illinois

(Note: Daughter, who is now widowed, and her two children)

But also Martin Thompson 5 July 1867 DeKalb County, GA

The 1870 Federal Census for Georgia helps to clear this up since it shows 3 grown men named Martin Thompson that year (as well as an infant son in Milton, GA): one in DeKalb, one in Paulding, and one in Walton county. The Martin Thompson in question is the one in Dekalb, based upon age and birthplace.

Thompson / Knox abt 1820 N.C.

By Patrick Thompson July 25, 2011

Martin Thompson reportedly married M Catherine Knox (Polk) abt. 1820; He was from S.C. and She was from N.C. per later Census Records; rumor is she was from "Mecklenburg County", NC.Prior to the 1841 record below, we can find "NO" information...

Looking for information on MARTIN THOMPSON who purchased 80 acres in the 1st District of the 1st Section; Lots 47 & 86, Forsyth County, GA from James (?-hard to read) Roberts on the 24th day of October 1841. He later bought an additional 40 adjoining acres (same dist + sect) Lot 87 from David Blackwell on the 21st day of January 1843.

Martin Thompson is listed in the Forsyth County GA 1850 Agricultural Census and the 1850 Federal Census #900. His Wife and All the Children are listed on the Federal Census but his oldest Child, A.J. Thompson.

The 1850 Census reports him being born in SC and his wife Catherine being born in NC. All children are shown born in NC except for the youngest child, Ransom Thompson, who was born in Forsyth County, GA in 1846.

There was one marriage from this family out of Forsyth County, GA in 1853. Martin's daughter, Sophronia Thompson, married Jesse (Jessie) Webb BOOK C; PAGE 23 FORSYTH COUNTY GEORGIA RECORDS, 08 Dec 1853.

Martin Thompson Sold his land in Forsyth County, GA before 1860 and moved to Tucker, GA where the family moved as well and settled in Stone Mountain, DeKalb County, GA.

ANY information on this Family (any member) would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. We have hit a brick wall on information pertaining to Forsyth County, GA or MARTIN and CATHERINE's Origins prior to 1841.

The information above is "not" the same Martin Thompson as the one confirmed by Grave Headstone to have been born 6 May 1793. All of the inquiries above were nothing more than veriifcation needed. I have personally visited the Grave of Martin and Catherine / Katherine Thompson and have confirmed the dates found on this profile.
